< Under the weather / to feel under the weather >

 

=몸이 좀 안 좋은, 기운이 없는, 숙취가 있는

=If you are feeling a bit sick. sad or have no energy.

=비슷한 표현 < to feel off > 몸 상태가 좋지 않다, 정신이 멍하다.

 

 

직역하면 <날씨 아래에 있다> 오늘 날씨보다 아래 있으니 상태가 안 좋다는 얘기.

나름 말이 된다. Make Sense!

Under the weather는 아플 때나 취했을 때 숙취로 고생할 때 쓸 수 있다.

 

예문) 

 

ⓐ Mildly ill 조금 아플 때

ex. I was under the weather last week, but I'm feeling much better now.

나 지난 주에 조금 아팠어. 그런데 지금은 많이 괜찮아졌어.

 

ⓑ Drunk 취했을 때

Do you remember last night at the bar at all? You were really under the weather!

너 어제 바에서 있었던 일 다 기억나? 너 어제 진짜 취했었어.

<On cloud nine>

 

=extremely happy : 극도로 행복한

=blissful(blissfully) : 더 없이 행복한

 

 

 

우리도 너무 기분이 좋을 때 “구름위에 떠 있는 것 같다”라는 표현을 쓰는 것처럼 On cloud nine은 너무 기분이 좋을 때, 행복할 때 쓰는 영어표현이다.

 

 

예문)

 

When I got my promotion, I was on cloud nine. When the check came, I was on cloud nine for days.

내가 승진했을 때, 나 진짜 행복했어. 월급이 들어왔을 때는 나는 며칠 동안 진짜 행복했어!!

 

When Michael was born I was on cloud nine. I couldn't believe this beautiful little boy was ours.

마이클이 태어났을 때 난 진짜 행복했어. 나한테 이렇게 예쁜 아이가 생겼다는 걸 믿을 수가 없었어.

<Get wind of something / catch wind of something>

 

= (비밀이었던) 소식을 전해 듣다. 입수하다.

=To hear or learn about something. especially if it was meant to be secret.

 

 

직역하면 “어떤 바람을 잡다” 다시 말해 바람에 휩쓸려온 소식을 우연히 전해들었다는 느낌으로 원래는 비밀이었던 어떤 소문이나 사실을 알게 되었을 때 쓰는 표현이다.

 

예문)

 

The police got wind of the illegal drug deal.

경찰은 불법마약거래에 대한 정보를 입수했다.

 

John caught wind of the gossip being spread about him.

존은 그에 대해 퍼져있던 소문을 들었다.
